Ending Water Poverty One Step At a Time
"A world in which everyone has access to clean and safe water, forever."
A Cause Close To My Heart
Working in an industry that accounts for a huge amount of water waste every year, Sargossa has been constantly taking steps towards minimising the use of excess water. Since 2019, our workshops in Portugal have been using untanned leather for linings that require the least amount of water to be used, and Sargossa as a brand is striving to keep improving our eco footprint through the years.
To be able to make a positive impact, I recognise the need to take our strive to help further. Although all our production happens in Europe, we know we need to stand together and aid communities outside of Sargossa's regular reach to aid communities with basic human needs. After connecting with the One Foundation, I heard the stories and women and children living in the villages in Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, having to walk miles for a clean water source. Being a brand that puts focus on foot and general health before anything, I knew this is a cause Sargossa and the Sargossa customers have to stand up for. With this collaboration, I hope to raise awareness and provide clean water sources to communities who need it the most.
Meet The One Foundation
Since 2007, The One Foundation has been funding sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes. The charity currently works in Malawi, Rwanda, Ghana and Kenya, working in urban, peri-urban and rural communities. The One Foundation’s ultimate ambition is to be able to walk away from projects knowing that they are self-sustaining. Their grant-making is therefore underpinned by key principles, with a huge focus on sustainability. To achieve sustainable projects, there is a large focus on collaboration with local communities, governments and utility companies and a focus on training and education within communities on maintenance and repair of water pumps and piped water systems.
What is water poverty?
A recent report from The World Health Organisation reveals that whilst 1.8 billion people have gained access to basic drinking water services since 2000, but there are vast inequalities in the accessibility, availability and quality of these services. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people (785 million) still lack basic services, including the 144 million who drink untreated surface water. The report also states that every year, 297 000 children under 5 years die due to diarrhoea linked to inadequate WASH. Poor sanitation and contaminated water are also linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, and typhoid.
Creating The Stiletto Revolution
Sargossa was founded with a strive to learn more and adapt to ethical fashion standards. It's a story and journey that made me the brand constantly improve. For example, although our production started in Asia, we recognised the need for a change after our standards didn't meet the factories general guidelines, which is the year we moved our production to Portugal. A place where we can easily monitor transparency by visiting the workshop and our workers who ensure every pair is perfect. Since then and in the last 6 years, Sargossa continously wants to help where people have less and is on its way to become a part of a movement, hence our collaboration with the One Foundation.
